Atlas Pool Room  and  Stag Club   -  1920's

Photos and information submitted by Bick Beckwith 11-6-2002

In the late 1920's, my grandfather and uncle bought the pool room and operated it for a while...I think the depression hit and they may have sold it or could have even lost it...I don't know for sure.  I was quite young being born in 1925 plus families didn't talk about those things in those days!   I have a couple pictures of the pool room you may find valuable...one is of the outside, the other was taken from the front entry looking to the back.  The front was the cigar stands, shoeshine stand, and beer taps...behind the partition was located the pool tables and card tables where a bit of gambling went on.  No one under 18 was permitted back of the partition.  My grandfather, Willis E. Bicknell, is on the left and my uncle, Orrie Bicknell, is on the right.  These two men were bigger than life to me...my grand dad lived to be 96 and worked for the State of Michigan till he was in his early 90's...my uncle Orrie could shot a 22 cal. rifle and hit a dime sized rock that I would throw sky high blowing it to smithereens.  All the Bicknell men were known as 'Bick'...hence my nickname.  My grandfather and grandmother are buried in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Through the years, The Pool Room has changed ownership several times.  It was known as Cronin's Bar during the1950s-1990s, CJ's Bar and Grill, and is now known Rumors.
