A History of Hartford
by Charles A. Spaulding

People and Events of the township and Village of
Hartford, Michigan
during the first 100 years of Occupation by White Settlers
1829 - 1929
|
|
Read an informative
154-page recording of Hartford's beginnings by Charles Spaulding.
Charles was appointed as historian of Hartford Township in his connection
with the Van Buren County Centennial Celebration in October, 1929.
You'll find trials and triumphs in the daily lives of our first settlers in
their attempt to carve a new life and a place to live for their families.
Don F. Cochrane, author of the Forward to this
book, writes "It is an
exceptionally readable and authentic history of Hartford that Mr. Spaulding
compiled, and which was published in The Day Spring in 38 weekly installs.
His intimate knowledge of Hartford, his acquaintance with the people of the
township, his ability as a writer and his devotion to the task made him the
logical author of that history.
Our community is indebted to Mr. Spaulding and Mr.
Cochrane for recording this first chapter in the history of Hartford and
their insight to present it in a way that could be passed on for generations. A
History of Hartford, is a
wonderful resource of the venturesome progenies who came before us.
